Learn More About OCD Therapy

Do you find yourself feeling consumed by recurrent intrusive thoughts and feel compelled to engage in time consuming repetitive behaviors? Are you debilitated by fear, anxiety, and uncertainty? Are feelings of guilt and shame keeping you from seeking help for these symptoms? I want you to know you are not alone.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a mental health disorder that affects individuals of all ages.  The “O” in OCD stands for obsessions, which are categorized as unwanted and intrusive thoughts that cause an individual significant levels of anxiety. The “C” in OCD stands for compulsions which are repetitive behaviors/thoughts or ritualistic actions an individual engages in to neutralize the distress and anxiety caused by obsessions.

Common obsessions include: Contamination obsessions, somatic obsessions, aggression and harm obsessions, religion and scrupulosity obsessions, sexual obsessions, sexual orientation obsessions, pedophile obsessions, Impulse control obsessions, need for symmetry and exactness, relationship obsessions, postpartum obsessions and perfectionism.

Common compulsions include: Checking, cleaning, ordering and arranging, repeating, mental compulsions, reassurance seeking, confessing, and avoidance.

The cycle of obsessions and compulsions is extremely time consuming, exhausting, and may feel as if it is never ending. You are not alone. Let’s talk about treatment. The most effective treatment for OCD is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), more specifically the use of Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP), which is a type of CBT. In addition to ERP, I utilize practices of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness to help you face your fears, learn how to manage symptoms, and live the life you desire. I am a graduate of the International OCD Foundation’s Behavioral Therapy Training Institute (BTTI) where I received training in treating OCD using ERP.  In addition, I have attended the IOCDF’s annual conferences.

If you are struggling with any of the above symptoms. Please reach out. No one needs to suffer in silence. You are not alone and there is hope. Together we can work as a team to confront these fears.
